Peninsula Virtual Pub are thrilled to present
The seed was planted for Matt around the age of eight through family friends playing the acoustic guitar at family gatherings. Following those early years, it quickly became clear to Matt and those close to him that music, in some way, shape, or form was sure to stick around.
Fast forward to today, Matt Katsis has emerged into an alternative singer-songwriter & guitarist with an individual edge; continuing that affinity toward the guitar, a partnership going strong over two decades on since he set his sights on that 6-string acoustic.
After extensively touring the past few years with a “one-man-band” live approach featuring percussive elements of 6 & 9-string acoustic guitars, kick drum, tambourine and harmonica, Victorian based Australian Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist Matt Katsis has taken to audiences far and wide with the ease and merit that parallel’s his music.
Support shows with Australian Blues & Roots music aficionados Jeff Lang and Backsliders were highlights in 2019 and previously he completed a run of 30 shows across the country in support of his ‘As The River Runs’ EP Release Tour. Recent festival performances include; Echuca Winter Blues, Mornington Peninsula Blues Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival, Marysville Jazz & Blues Weekend and Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival.
His 2017 EP release “As The River Runs” & recent 2019 live album “Live At The Wheaty” (The Wheatsheaf, Adelaide) encompasses his distinctive fusion of folk, blues and roots and hints at influences of alternative country and Americana.
Live At The Wheaty presents a collection of songs captured live, raw and solo during the Adelaide leg of his past National tours. As The River Runs was inspired by his travels through North America’s West and the deep South, the recording process for the EP was a lengthy one but necessary to achieve the sounds imagined by Matt. After the initial live recordings took place in a small church in the goldfields area of Victoria, the remainder of the EP was recorded by Matt himself with just one condenser microphone.
When asked about the EP, Matt explains;
“This EP as a whole has pushed me further as a singer-songwriter, which has led me to cross new territory through a wider use of instrumentation and in particular a refined view on song form and arrangement.”
A Bluesman at heart and avid wanderer reflecting troubadour tradition, albeit delicate folk ballads to foot stomping slide guitar driven down-home blues swagger - stay tuned for new single releases and much more ahead.
